Insurers recognise the advantage of documenting tacit medical underwriting guidelines and making updated clinical information available as a quick reference tool.

Milliman has developed evidence-based medical underwriting recommendations to achieve greater medical underwriting efficiency. Our recommendations, based on extensive best practice research, published evidence, and suitability to the Indian market, are available for 120 medical and surgical conditions and serve as an evidence-based clinical tool to guide action on medical insurance proposal forms. The tool helps to categorise proposals under different risk scenarios, such as liberal, average, and conservative.

Customising underwriting guidelines for use in Indian operations

An Indian health insurer engaged us to review the appropriateness of underwriting guidelines provided by its reinsurer for its use in India. Our review included critiquing the guidelines content in line with evidence and practice patterns prevalent in India. We worked with this client to modify its underwriting guidelines for use in India.

Two health insurance companies in India have integrated medical underwriting recommendations into their work flows. Use of these recommendations has contributed to standardised, consistent, information-based decision making among the company underwriters.
