Company History

Milliman has been a leader in actuarial consulting since 1947, when renowned actuary and insurance industry veteran Wendell Milliman launched the Pacific Northwest’s first actuarial firm. Wendell was later joined by a brilliant young actuary named Stuart Robertson, and together they established Milliman & Robertson—a visionary company that quickly developed into one of the nation’s most influential actuarial consulting firms.

Early on, Milliman and Robertson cultivated a unique work culture that placed a high value on independence, both from the distractions of outside ownership and the bureaucratic impediments of more conventional business models. Independence, they believed, would promote trailblazing and unbiased consulting work, which would attract clients looking for innovative solutions and objective professional advice. They also felt that an unconventional and equitable working environment would help them recruit the best minds in the industry. Their experiment was a success and the firm’s reputation flourished.

Today we are the premier independent provider of actuarial and risk management services to the insurance industry and self-insured organizations worldwide. Our groundbreaking work in employee benefits and financial risk management has led to significant innovations in retirement planning, including the Milliman Managed Risk Strategy™ and the Milliman Sustainable Income Plan™. As the leading provider of actuarial, analytical, and data management solutions in the U.S. healthcare industry, we have played a prominent role in the implementation of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act of 2010 (ACA).

While our roots are actuarial, we have expanded our capabilities to include enterprise risk management, retirement plan administration, predictive analytics, healthcare efficiency, and a range of other consulting and technology solutions. We have been leaders in enterprise computing since the 1960s, and that leadership continues today with cloud-based solutions like Integrate®, the industry’s foremost actuarial transformation system.

Milliman principals have served in leadership roles with the American Academy of Actuaries, the Brazilian Institute of Actuaries, the Dutch Actuarial Association, the Casualty Actuarial Society, the Institute of Actuaries, and the Society of Actuaries, and as board members for The Actuarial Foundation, the Actuarial Standards Board, the Institute of Actuaries of India, the Italian National Council of Actuaries, and the Staple Inn Actuarial Society. Our research in the areas of retirement, healthcare and risk management is regularly mentioned in the press and has been cited by the United States Congress and the U.S. Supreme Court.
